School Programs

The Big Bear City Fire Department is actively involved with our local schools. With three public and several private or home schools within the district, our schools serve nearly 2000 students. We have been offering programs annually to our schools since 1989.

Elementary school programs for grades K thru 6 include Smokey’s Fire Safety, Stop, Drop and Roll, and Fire, Earthquake Preparedness. The younger kids really enjoy the visits by Smokey and his friends as they read books and tell stories of heroic rescues.

Some of the other programs offered include:
Fire Station Tours
CPR / First Aid
Fire Extinguishers
Disaster Preparedness
Every 15 Minutes
High school students in selected classes receive training in CPR, First Aid, Portable Fire Extinguishers, and Disaster Preparedness

Another program of great interest to the students is Career Day. Students can get firsthand knowledge, and ask questions of the visiting Fire Fighters. Sparking an interest in many that led to involvement with our Fire Explorer Program.

One of our favorite High School programs brings students not only from our area, but also from many surrounding communities as far out as up to 50 miles away and as many as 1000 students. The Every 15 Minutes Program in partnership with the San Bernardino County Sheriff and California CHP involves several days of Drunk Driving education that culminates in dramatic mock traffic accident. Fire Engines, Police Cars, Helicopters, screaming and crying friends add to the realism, all centered on the Homecoming weekend.
