| Public Information Officer |
 Currently, Administrative Assistant Deanne Johanson has assumed the duties as Public Information Officer (PIO) for the Big Bear City Fire Department. She has been the PIO on several large incidents, disasters, and fires during her 20 years of service. In 2005, she attended the National Fire Academy taking the Advanced PIO class and received her certification. The following is a list of basic responsibilities for a PIO:
· Establishes and maintains a list of media contacts in the local area.
· Strives to establish and maintain personal contacts with appropriate representatives of those media.
· Becomes a contact for the local media and assures that editors/reporters who need information about the Big Bear City Fire Department receive the information in a professional and timely manner.
· Keeps informed of activities and incidents and identifies and publicizes those that are newsworthy or carry human-interest appeal. (This is usually done through news releases or suggestions for interviews or feature stories).
· Responds to large incidents, events, or disasters to handle PIO duties, trying to keep the public informed.
· Attempts to deal with and minimize any negative publicity about Big Bear City Fire Department and to correct any negative stories.
· Generates advance publicity through the local media of scheduled activities, meetings, events, incidents, etc.
· Keeps the Fire Chief fully informed on media related to the Big Bear City Fire Department.
